The phone has been ringing off the hook for The Cat Empire's Harry James Angus.

Ever since fledgling AFL club Greater Western Sydney's new theme song- which he wrote- was released, a large section of the media has been ringing up to say Hello, Hello.

“That’s all I’ve been doing, answering questions about it,” he laughs.

The song was released nationally late last week, with many listeners picking up a slight Russian flavour to the tune.

“I guess I can hear the Russian thing now, a lot of people have been saying that," he says.

“But when I wrote it, I wasn’t thinking of making it sound Russian in any way.

“What I was really trying to do was write a song in the style of the old school footy song.

“So that’s the melody that popped into my head.

“I think because it’s in a minor key, it gives it that Russian or Jewish kind of feel. I love that sound."

Angus, who isn't even a big footy fan, wasn't hired by the AFL; he just had a friend who worked for (AFL CEO) Andrew Demetriou.

“I got speaking to a friend of a friend who works at the AFL and he mentioned they didn’t have a song yet,” Angus says.

“I’d been thinking for a while I’d like to do a song for one of the new teams, and to make it sound like the classic footy songs... as opposed to making it sound really modern.

“(But) I wasn’t really interested it if it had rock ‘n’ roll guitars and drums and stuff."

We presume that's a sly dig at the West Coast Eagles.
