FOOD AND FARE: A warm welcome can be found at the tavern.

Traditional pub meals are the order of the day at the Axedale Tavern since Garry Van Wynen, Corinne Cummins and Corinne’s mum, Wendy Kelly took it over about 12 months ago.

Corinne and Garry lived in the Axedale district for five years, after moving from Kalgoorlie.

“We love Axedale and decided to buy the Tavern when we knew it was in need of some TLC. The locals have been extremely supportive”, Corinne said.

The tavern is their first foray into hospitality, Wendy was a Tupperware manager in Kalgoorlie, while Corinne, who was a teacher beforehand was used to reading, writing and arithmetic of a different kind.

These days it’s all about menus, table bookings and balancing the books between caring for four children aged five to 14.

“Mum and I look after things during the day and Garry, who still works full time, takes charge in the evenings.” Corinne said.

Like most new business owners, their first year hasn’t been without its challenges.

“My mum’s husband, who was also a partner in the business, passed away earlier this year, so that made things difficult,” Corinne said.

“But we receive  great feedback about our meals, chef, Marnie Kenyon, and our friendly staff. It has been better than we expected”.
