THE battle to become the Liberal Party candidate for the federal seat of Bendigo at next year's election is a race between three.

Three candidates nominated for the party's preselection as the deadline passed this week.

Peter Wiseman, transport company owner Greg Bickley of Goornong and Jack Lyons are the three who will undertake the arduous preselection process.

Lyons is the son of City of Greater Bendigo councillor Barry Lyons, who is tipped to run for the Liberals in the next state election.

The official Liberal announcement on the three candidates is expected to be announced on Thursday evening.

Although Labor holds the seat by almost 10 per cent, senior ALP figures believe it could fall to the Liberals.

Member for Bendigo Steve Gibbons will retire at the election.

Lawyer Greg Westbrook and Kyneton-based union official Lisa Chesters have already been named as possible Labor candidates.
