Bendigo film buffs can get a taste of the cream of the celluloid crop when the 2011 St Kilda Film Festival Tour rolls into town next week.

The festival, which annually showcases the best of Australia’s short films, will bring a selection of prize winning films and crowd pleasers from the festival’s Top 100, to Eaglehawk’s Star Cinema next Tuesday (August 16).

As part of a nation-wide tour, films on display include The Telegram Man, featuring Jack Thompson and Sigrid Thornton, and The Kiss, which took out the festival’s top honour of Best Short Film this year.

Festival director Paul Harris said the festival represented the “entry level” for all budding Aussie filmmakers.

“All successful Australian filmmakers started off making short films,” he said, pointing out that the Australian smash hit of 2006, Kenny, began as a short film at the St Kilda Film Festival, winning the prize for best comedy.

Harris said the Bendigo leg of the tour also provided regional auteurs, producers and actors a snap shot of the quality in this country.

“It’s great opportunity for people to get an overview of what’s happening, what the themes people are interested in,” he said.

“It takes a special talent to make an effective short film.”
