For two years, parents of students at a White Hills primary school have been asking VicRoads for action on their road crossing.
This week, after two more incidents outside the school, they have run out of patience.
“It’s beyond belief,” Holy Rosary Catholic Primary School chairman Christine Leahy said yesterday.
“We’ve been told by VicRoads that they don’t see the crossing as a risk, because accidents happen outside school hours.
“It’s a dangerous road and only going to get worse.
“What we want is flashing school-zone lights like they have for other schools, but we’ve been told (by VicRoads) there is no more money in that budget.”
Ms Leahy said the crossing has been damaged at least four times in the past couple of years.
On Monday, students had to cross the road without a safety barrier in the centre, after it was crashed into overnight.
Yesterday, the flashing light on the centre island was also down, hit and demolished overnight by another of the vehicles which use busy Napier Street, the A300 out of Bendigo to Epsom and Echuca.
“Our lollypop woman is having heart failure, trying to keep kids safe crossing the road,” Ms Leahy said.
“The council has told us it’s up to VicRoads and VicRoads say they don’t think it’s unsafe but we know those flashing speed-limit signs do work, to slow people down.
“What’s it going to take to make them do something?”
