No sign of change at school crossing

GO SLOW: But no signs will be installed.

Parents of primary school students who cross one of Bendigo’s busiest arterial roads have vowed to fight on, despite a knockback from VicRoads to their request for electronic speed limit signs.
Last week, the school crossing outside Holy Rosary Primary School on Napier Street at White Hills was damaged twice by vehicles.
Christine Leahy, who chairs the school council, said it was the latest in a long line of incidents.
Many parents of students and local residents are convinced that electronic speed limit signs are necessary on the crossing.
One parent, Nadine Robertson, said she had been asking for the flashing speed signs to be installed for more than two years, as the traffic volume on the road steadily increases.
During that time, the school student population has also grown by about 20 per cent to 240.
This week, VidRoads said the crossing will stay as it is.
“The current school crossing is working as designed,” VicRoads Northern Region regional director  Mal Kersting said.
“Recent incidents resulting in damage to the crossing have occurred after school hours (not during school speed zone hours).
“At present, there is no program to install additional electronic signs at school speed zones.”
Ms Leahy said the school council met this week and supported further requests to be made to VicRoads and the City of Greater Bendigo, which share a
maintenance agreement for the crossing.
“Now the issue is more public, many people have come to me – it seems everyone has a story about the crossing, and it’s a bit scary,” she said.
“There is definitely a speed problem and it’s not just after school hours.
“The only time it slows is when the crossing supervisor puts up the sign.”
Ms Leahy said a police road patrol had monitored the crossing one day last week, with several cars booked for speeding.
“I have the support to follow it through, so the council will now organise a response to VicRoads,” she said.
