BENDIGO'S CBD traders have started fighting back to have a playground built in the Hargreaves Mall.

The traders have begun circulating a petition calling for the reinstatement of the playground back into council's budget.

It was revealed earlier this month council had scrapped the mall playground idea.

Instead, the budget revealed $200,000 would be spend this financial year on upgrading the large screens in the mall, and employing a staff member to plan events in the mall in an attempt to attract children there.

"We want them to reallocate funds to the playground, something that is useful," mall trader and Bendigo Traders' Association executive member Martin Ruffell said.

"It will form part of our budget submission."
