FORMER City of Greater Bendigo mayor David Jones has changed his mind and will not run at October's elections.

Mr Jones told the Bendigo Weekly he had made the decision for family reasons.

"I reached a fork in the road, looked at both forks and chose one, for positive reasons" he said.

"I decided not to run for life-work-family balance."

In July, Mr Jones revealed the Greens would run endorsed candidates in the three new council wards, and he would seek preselection for one of the positions.

The Greens' plan was attacked by most of the sitting council, for introducing organised party politics into local government elections.

Mr Jones was mayor for two years of the previous council term, and was one of five councillors thrown out at the 2008 election.

Despite being part of a council that approved the disastrous Hargreaves Mall redevelopment, Mr Jones later described the project as a "lemon" and a "disgrace".

Jones voted against the Mall whilst Lisa Ruffell was its greatest advocate as the President of the then Mall Traders. Your treatment of him over the years has been disgraceful.

That is a shame for the ratepayers David because I believe you would have done a great job this time around. All the best.

Yes, David Jones has something to be proud of, in addition to having been a Mayor of Bendigo Council, in that he was the only councillor in the 2004 to 2008 term, to vote against what turned out to be the disastrous Hargreaves Mall 'upgrade / downgrade'.
It is interersting that two of our incumbent councillors, Messrs Sandner and Campbell have not as yet announced whether they will contest the October election. Interesting times ahead, as I suspect more and more intending candidates will announce their intentions.
I feel the heat may be building up in some kitchens.
