How does your garden grow?

At the beginning of spring, we gardeners were keen to get our veggie gardens up and growing and looking forward to the fruits of our labours come summer.

To get those plots started, Keith MacDonald of MacDonald’s nursery shared his tips for a no-dig garden with us.

So how are the veggies progressing?

Following Keith’s suggestions, I planted onions, parsnips, carrots, broccoli and spinach and sat back to wait for my crops to come in.

Everything is doing really well but the broccoli quickly produced little side florets
and sadly, the next day they turned into yellow flowers instead of nice, crisp green broccoli heads.

After asking around the veggie patches I discovered this problem is not unique to my plot.

A quick Google search produced an answer courtesy of the Burke’s Backyard website;

“To stop broccoli going to seed and dying, continue to feed the plant and harvest the stems. The plant will continue to put out side shoots. If the heads of broccoli are allowed to flower the plants will seed and your production will cease.

To keep plants growing strongly feed every month with Dynamic Lifter. ”

I admit to neglecting to feed my broccoli so we may have to eat spinach instead this year.

Garden lovers should not miss the beautiful Bendigo gardens open this weekend as part of the Open Gardens Australia Scheme.
