BENDIGONIANS have reported feeling a large earthquake that hit the east of the state tonight.

Just before 9pm a 5.2 magnitude quake was reported 9.9 kilometres below the surface 10 kilometres south of Moe in Gippsland.

Bendigo locals took to the Weekly's Facebook page to record the event as their windows shook.

"Golden Square! The house was shaking," Michelle Martin said.

"Yep tremor in Ascot/Epsom, very scary," Bronwyn Morley Camm said.

"Felt it in golden square," Melissa Gray-Loehr posted.

Damara Pearson said: "It felt more like a vibration in Eaglehawk!"

"Yep North Bendigo, I thought it was a train for a minute but couldn't hear it," Sandra O'Connor said.

Erin Smith of Kennington told a similar story.

"I felt it in Kennington. Was really weak but still felt it," she said.

"I am in White Hills and I felt it, Mary Mogyorossy-Wilshurst said.

 "Yep house shook for about 30 seconds or so. I thought Maddy was jumping in the hallway," Sharon Hill said.
