THE excavation works for the $8.4 million expansion of Bendigo Art Gallery are now complete with more than 8,000 cubic metres of soil removed from the site leaving a large nine-metre deep hole at the construction site.

Greater Bendigo City Futures  director Stan Liacos said work at the site is progressing on schedule for completion before the end of 2013.

“Work is progressing well,” he said.

“Ninety-five per cent of the demolition is now complete, the concrete slab for the new Pavilion Gallery has been poured, services have been relocated, foundation piling, capping beams to the piling and shotcreting have all been completed.

“This is a very important major project that is part of the View Street Arts Precinct Master Plan and will solve a number of space issues for exhibition, education and storage facilities at the gallery.”

Gallery director Karen Quinlan said despite the works it was still business as usual at the gallery.

“I encourage people to visit the gallery during the works to view our planned exhibitions and our permanent collection,” she said.
