Dave Faulkner: seeking songs and a scene

For the Hoodoo Gurus’ Dave Faulkner, crafting a hit tune is a lot like sketching or sculpting, and sometimes you need to follow your nose, and your instincts.

But for arguably the band’s finest work, What’s My Scene? he had absolutely no idea what he was writing about.

“I’m a music guy first,” Faulkner says of his approach to songwriting.

“That little melody became the chorus: ‘What’s my, what’s my, what’s my scene?’

“(But) even though I didn’t know what I was singing about yet, it (the melody) suggested that lyric.

“I liked the title, and the 60s references, like Like Wow - Wipeout, and I liked the idea of ‘my scene baby’ (coos).

“You’re expressing things you don’t even know what you’re talking about yet, your subconscious is coming out."

After 30 years in the business, Faulkner is still very much a deep thinker, about life and music.

“I’m always questioning my sanity... and who I really am, and where I fit in," he says.

“That’s what that song (What's My Scene?) expresses, a few of my songs express that idea: where do I belong?

“You always question what you’re doing and what’s next for me?"

Has he answered that question?

“No I haven’t (laughs), I guess I belong in the Hoodoo Gurus, I’ve been there so bloody long,” he laughs.

The Hoodoo Gurus celebrate 30 years in the business with Dig It Up! on April 25 at The Palace in Melbourne.
