BRENDA GRIFFIN has the lowdown on a new sport.

This former state netballer has taken up the calmer pastime of lawn bowls.

Brenda and her husband Gary have moved into semi-retirement and looked for a sport they could do together.

“We wanted something with flexibility and a bit of a social life too,” she said.

“Lawn bowls provides both.”

The Strathfieldsaye Bowls Club has a Come and Try day on Sunday at noon, so you can try your hand at the gentler game.

The club’s Helen Liddell said the day is the perfect opportunity to have a go.

“It saves having to go to the expense of buying the bowls,” she said.

“There is a free sausage sizzle, and feel free to bring the family.

“All you need to bring is a pair of flat-soled shoes.”

Another member new to the sport is ex-footy player Curly Britten.

After playing the game and 30 years with Auskick he’s happy to show you the ropes on the green.

“It’s a game for all ages really,” he said.

“I’m happy to give some hints to new players.”
