PLANS to end the Mitchell Street bus chaos are expected to be presented to the City of Greater Bendigo council next month.
In October, the Bendigo Weekly revealed the council had shelved its controversial plan to widen the Mitchell Street footpaths and have the buses stop in the left hand lane of the busy street.
Council’s new plan, which is yet to be released publicly, involves keeping the bus stops where they are, but building two large, modern bus shelters nearby.
One shelter will be built at the Mitchell Street end of Hargreaves Mall, and another in the middle of Hargreaves Street, facing Mitchell.
The Weekly believes two large signs using latest technology will be at the shelters, telling people when the next bus is about to arrive, giving them time to move to the stop.
The technology will also allow people to receive updates on their mobile phones about the progression of the buses.
The new plan will also see a total redevelopment of the Mitchell Street surface.
Council Presentation and Assets director Darren Fuzzard has been working with traders to talk through the plan, and the next step is wider consultation.
“We will go back to council close to the end of March,” he said.
“We are waiting on some evidence from the Department of Transport about how the (real-time timetable) system is working for them.
“We want to know if it is accurate and whether they have recorded or observed a change in behaviour because of it.”
Mr Fuzzard said the technological solution should ease any infrastructure concerns.
“It means the infrastructure solution is limited to these two buildings,” he said.
“We can then do streetscape works purely to improve the streetscape and they are not critical to the solution.
“We just want to be comfortable the technology works and it changes behaviour.
“We will seek approval from council to take it to further consultation.”
