Bendigo is planning to celebrate the National Year of Reading with a new writers’ festival.
The Capital theatre is set to be the location from August 10 to 12 for a three-day program of discussion and events.
Building on Bendigo’s strength as a contemporary cultural centre with a rich history, the festival will provide a meeting place for local writers and readers.
“We have so much going on now in Bendigo and the region, for art, and culture and writing in all its forms, it’s well and truly time for us to have a festival,” La Trobe University’s Sue Gillett said this week.
“View Street is a perfect setting for a long weekend at the end of winter, where we can welcome visitors and have a good time.”
Dr Gillett oversees the Strategic Communication degree course on the Bendigo campus of La Trobe, which includes units in journalism, media, public relations and marketing.
“We also have a strong cohort of creative writing students who are champing at the bit to be involved in a writers’ festival,” she said.
“We have strong links with La Trobe’s alumni community, so that will provide a good source of writers.
“The university is fully behind Bendigo Writers’ Festival, and we’ll have hopefully lots to offer.”
Central Goldfields Library Corporation, La Trobe University, Bendigo Tourism and the Bendigo Weekly, are behind the proposal, which is also being supported by local businesses and organisations, including the Bendigo Writers Council.
Local writer John Charalambous said it’s time for the city to join the network of writers’ festivals across Australia.
“Bendigo has developed a diverse and sophisticated culture, deeply interested in the arts,” Mr Charalambous said.
“In particular, the city has a vibrant writing and performing culture, with many practitioners across the various forms.
“This will brand Bendigo as an exciting and intellectually stimulating place to be.”
