PREMIER Ted Baillieu has announced his controversial chief of staff will be moving on.

Michael Kapel, who met with Sir Ken Jones at the height of the Simon Overland tensions, will become the government’s Commissioner for the Americas.

“Throughout the past five years Mr Kapel, as my Chief of Staff, has made an outstanding contribution providing political, policy and strategic advice to me,” Mr Baillieu said.

“His wise counsel and high level contribution to the work of the Parliamentary Liberal Party, the Coalition, Cabinet and Government has been a major part of our collective efforts leading up to the Coalition’s election victory in November 2010 and in Government.

“We could not have asked more of him.”

Liberal Party stalwart Tony Nutt will take over from Mr Kapel.

“For the past 12 months Mr Nutt has worked directly for me running the Cabinet Office,” Mr Baillieu said.

“Mr Nutt was state director of the Liberal Party from 2008 to 2011 and was the  campaign director of the 2010 state election campaign.

“He served as a principal adviser to former Prime Minister John Howard from 1997 to 2007, and brings three decades of political, cabinet and government experience to the role of Chief of Staff.

“Tony and I have known and worked with each other for 20 years and I am delighted that he has accepted my invitation to become chief of staff.”
