ACTING Premier Peter Ryan joined City of Greater Bendigo mayor Alec Sander to announced the beginning of the redevelopment of the art gallery this week.
The ceremony marked the beginning of the $8.4 million expansion, which will include the construction of two new gallery spaces and much needed storage and loading facilities.
The expansion of Bendigo Art Gallery is a major part of the View Street Arts Precinct Master Plan.
The total project will be funded by a $3.775m contribution from the State Government, a $3.625m from the council and a further $1m from the Bendigo Art Gallery Board and a philanthropic contribution.
The works by local construction company Fairbrother will be completed before the end of 2013.
The Bendigo Art Gallery and Gallery Cafe will remain open for business throughout the duration of the construction period.
