With much gratitude we acknowledge the great work of Bendigo citizen Don Erskine who has retired this week from the board of Coliban Water.
Just how much of a debt is owed this man is impossible to calculate but his timely intervention and leadership four years ago saved Bendigo from literally running out of water.
By 1996 our water reserves had reached critical levels. 
The decline had not happened overnight, yet the State Government and Coliban Water had no plans in place. 
When they finally realised something needed to be done they dithered and proposed a pipeline connecting the Goulburn system to Rochester – yes Rochester, not Bendigo. 
Their idea was that the irrigators in the Rochester area would be supplied by the Goulburn system thereby freeing up water in Lake Eppalock for Bendigo’s urban needs. 
The local members of parliament and the minister of water supply were in full agreement with this proposal, the minister pointing out that sometimes the cheapest solution was best.
A handful of Bendigo people, including engineer Don Erskine, realised the circumstances were so dire that only a pipeline to Bendigo – the expensive solution – could save the day.
