Engineers to the fore - Practical men worked in tandem

As well as being related by marriage, two very practical engineers combined their talents in business.
In 2007 I had something to say about engineer John Delbridge in relation to the Pearl Company mine.
The engineer who Delbridge was related to by marriage was William Middleton.
Both these men had an association going back to the time when they were working in Castlemaine at Vivian’s Foundry.
John Delbridge was born on April 5, 1845 at St Agnes Cornwall. He was the eighth out of a family of 14. Surprisingly, 10 of these children lived to see adulthood.
This extensive family migrated to the colony of South Australia, working at the Burra Burra copper mines.
Upon the gold discoveries in neighbouring Victoria, they tried their luck on the Central Victorian goldfields including Castlemaine.
The family did well out of the initial stint at the diggings, so much so that they were able to return to Cornwall for a visit in 1854.
Back in Fitzroy, father and sons Delbridge had established themselves in the building industry.
John Delbridge’s sister, Mary Ann, was married to George Richard Rowe Vivian. He took on an apprenticeship with his brother in law, in time rising to management level within the foundry.
